Marlen with her two host children in snowy New Hampshire.
Never a Dull Day! (Not when you have cows and a helicopter in your backyard!) by Marlen Weigel, Cultural Care au pair
My name is Marlen and I live in New London, New Hampshire with the Webster family: my host mum, her two kids, a dog and three Scottish highland cows.
One October morning, I got up as usual at 6:15am and did my work with the kids and brought them to the school bus. Then I took a shower and called my mum in Germany. Suddenly the door opened and a neighbor said that the cows had escaped and were walking on the street. I was so shocked! All the cars on the street stopped but nobody was helping.
Soon the phone rang. It was the police. They told me that I had to reach my host mom and she had to do something. It isn‘t easy to contact her at work because she doesn’t have her cell phone there. So I wrote her an email. Fortunately she read it pretty soon and called me. One problem: she didn’t have a car at work because she had gotten a ride from a friend.
Meanwhile the cows—smart cows—walked up the driveway and were standing in our yard eating the apples from the apple tree. The dog was going crazy and he was barking the whole time.
To be honest, I like the cows but I am also a little bit afraid of them. They are pretty big and strong and I don‘t really want to stand in front of them without a fence. So I was afraid to go outside.
My cows and I were lucky that my host mom got hold of a friend of hers who has experience with cows. He came over and got them back into their field.
Later we found out that about 3 yards of the electric fence was broken. So it was no big deal for the cows to get out for a walk. I think they were confused and happy when they were back in their place.
The Helicopter
A week and half after the “cows-went-out-day” another exciting thing happened. I was on the phone talking to Janina, another au pair, when suddenly a car was driving into the cows’ field. It was a fire truck. A few minutes later, I heard a loud sound and a helicopter was landing in the field. Our neighbors are building a big new house and something bad must have happened. This time the cows totally flipped out. They were running around and mooing. The whole thing took almost an hour and at the end there was one helicopter, a fire truck, two ambulances, a few other cars, three crazy cows, one crazy dog and a shocked Marlen. Within 10 minutes, everything was gone and there was just a mark in the field from the helicopter.
Despite the fact that New London is a small town, it never gets boring here.
